Healthy Habits at Home

Leanne

Being at home more often can make it more difficult to keep up your healthy habits. With your fridge only a few steps away, it’s tempting to keep grazing through the day.

Here are a few tips on how to keep your healthy habits going when your daily routine has changed:

  • Wake up and go to bed at a regular time each day

  • Get dressed and ready, as if you were still going to be leaving the house - as tempting as it is, don’t spend all day in your PJs.

  • Set yourself a place to work from (if relevant). It doesn’t have to be a full home office, but somewhere you can walk away from for a break or when you have finished work.

  • Keep regular meal times - 3 meals per day and 1-2 small snacks

  • Be prepared - have something prepped for lunch that you can warm up or something you can put together quite quickly.

  • If you fancy a snack, reach for the fruit bowl - aim to eat a minimum of 5 portions of fruit and veg per day

  • Drink plenty of water - it’s easy to forget, but we should be aiming for 2l per day. Keep a glass or bottle beside you while you work.

  • Take a break and leave your screen and chair behind for a few minutes - your head, back and eyes will thank you for it!

  • Stay active - get out of the house for at least 30 mins of fresh air and exercise every day. This could be a cycle, jog or a brisk walk with the dog.

  • Think about the food you are buying - pasta and rice might have a really long shelf-life but you need a variety of foods, flavours and colours on your plate. If your food is bland you are less likely to feel satisfied and more likely to go in search of something sweet. Likewise, if you fill your house with biscuits and crisps, you are much more likely to eat them.

  • Go easy on yourself - having a few biscuits isn't the end of the world. Make small changes and build on them.
